What Determines a Commercial Diver’s Salary?

Commercial diving can be a lucrative career. But what determines a commercial diver’s salary?

Each commercial diver’s salary is ultimately based on three key aspects:

Offshore vs. Inland … What’s the Difference?

When examining underwater career opportunities, you may wonder about the difference between offshore and inland commercial diving. Here are 4 key points to take into consideration:

What’s Involved with Inland Commercial Diving?

If you are considering an underwater career in diving, take a good look at the diverse opportunities available in inland commercial diving!

Each time you go over a bridge, think about the divers at work under the bridge.Every bridge requires commercial divers to build it, maintain it, and repair it. Inspections take place on a one to five year cycle as mandated by the state. Flooding, snow, and ice require additional emergency inspections and – frequently – repairs. This ensures steady work for inland commercial divers!

What’s Involved with Offshore Commercial Diving?

Underwater professionals are in high-demand in the open water of the Gulf of Mexico. This is where the vast majority of U.S. offshore commercial diving takes place. Oil rigs dot the ocean as petro pipelines create a complex network under the surface.

Offshore commercial diving begins with production. Oil rigs and pipelines need to be built according to precise specifications. Underwater professionals provide all the required welding and construction expertise.

Skills For Success

  • The mind of the commercial diver is one of his or her strongest assets. Commercial divers need to be critical thinkers skilled in complex problem solving, troubleshooting, system analysis, and decision making.

  • The commercial diver needs to have a good working relationship with technology! He or she must be able to select the best equipment for a job, monitor operations underwater, repair machines, and utilize state-of-the-art tools.

  • The commercial diver is always part of a team: a team both on land and in the water.

Where Our Graduates Are Working Now

  • Did you know? Our graduates are among the divers rebuilding the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: a four-lane 20-mile-long vehicular toll crossing of the lower Chesapeake Bay. The depth of the water along the route varies from 25 to 100 feet.
  • Did you know? Our graduates work with Underwater Construction Corporation (UCC) out of Essex CT – one of the leading providers of underwater services to commercial and government facilities.

Stand Out from the Crowd

At Divers Academy International, many students come to us from the topside welding industry, seeking underwater welder training. The reason? Many topside welders are “stuck” in their jobs. Promotions and raises come only infrequently. Even highly-skilled welders are often underemployed.
